Why is Kiln Drying Important?

Kiln drying is a critical step in the preparation of our logs, and it’s one that sets Carolina Log Homes apart through our partnership with Honest Abe Log Homes. Their custom-designed kilns ensure each log meets strict standards for performance, longevity, and appearance.

Consistency and Durability
By removing moisture before milling, kiln drying effectively “pre-shrinks” the wood. This process helps create a stable, uniform wall system with tight joints and minimal settling. In many regions of the U.S., our log system qualifies as “non-settling” – but our experienced team is always prepared to adjust building techniques to accommodate natural wood variations.

Reduced Cracking
Logs dried under carefully controlled conditions are less prone to checks (surface cracks), most of which occur during the drying phase or shortly after construction. This reduces long-term maintenance and enhances appearance.

Precise Grading
After kiln drying, trained inspectors grade each log to ensure only the highest quality pieces are included in your package. Our logs meet the LogWall-40 standard, as defined by Timber Products Inspection (TPI) regulations.

Pest Control
The intense heat of the kiln-drying process destroys fungi that can cause wood decay, along with any insects, larvae, or eggs hidden in the wood.

Resin Management
Resin in the wood crystallizes during kiln drying, significantly reducing the chance of sap surfacing after your home is completed.

Seamless, Long-lasting Finishes
Because kiln-dried logs are stable and dry, interior and exterior finishes can be applied immediately. These coatings are more likely to penetrate and bond effectively, creating long-lasting protection from the elements.

Lighter Weight
Kiln drying removes approximately 10,000 pounds of water from the log package of a typical home. This results in much lighter logs, making handling easier during construction – even the longest logs can typically be managed by two people.
